Banners Gate Wishes Steve Clark Well as He Departs for Retirement
After more than four decades of dedicated service to the engineering and construction industry, Steve Clark is hanging up his hard hat and stepping into a well-earned retirement. All of us at Banners Gate extend our warmest wishes and deepest thanks to Steve as he begins this exciting new chapter.
Steve has been a fundamental asset to the development of Banners Gate’s Structural Engineering department and has played a key role in the wider growth and success of the company. His leadership, technical expertise, and steady presence have shaped not just the projects he led, but the people he mentored along the way.
Steve’s remarkable career began at British Rail between 1977 and 1981. In 1979, he embarked on a full-time degree course in Civil Engineering, which included a placement year with Geotechnical consultants McClelland Ltd. After graduating in 1983 and a brief return to McClelland, Steve joined Oxford City Council as a Graduate Engineer, working on a variety of small-to-medium domestic and educational projects.
In 1985, Steve moved to the West Midlands to join Sandwell MBC, where he progressed to Project Engineer. His time there provided valuable experience in contaminated land, brownfield sites, and building control for large industrial developments.
In 1988, he joined Bovis Homes Technical Services, where he focused on structural design for residential, retirement, and high-rise developments — including major projects in London. He achieved Chartered Engineer status in 1989.
Following the early 1990s slowdown in construction, Steve transitioned into self-employment, offering his skills to various consultants and local authorities. Between 1990 and 1995, he worked on a wide range of projects, from pub refurbishments and school extensions to fire stations and large commercial builds.
In 1995, Steve became a junior partner at Baker Hall Consultancy, before taking on an international project in London in 2000. On returning to the Midlands, he worked for Watermans, Sandwell MBC, and ran his own projects as a freelance engineer.
In April 2002, Steve joined Banners Gate as Director of Structural Engineering alongside Tony Ayliffe, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to quality and integrity. For over two decades, he has led and shaped the structural team, delivering high-profile work and mentoring the next generation of engineers.
“Steve’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter, not just for him but for all of us at Banners Gate. His contribution to the company and the industry has been truly outstanding. We are grateful for his leadership, wisdom, and unwavering professionalism.”
Steve leaves behind a legacy of excellence, respect, and innovation. He will be greatly missed — but we wish him every happiness and relaxation in his retirement.
Thank you, Steve, for everything. Enjoy the journey ahead!
